09 Aug Finding Gratitude on your Journey through Life
We are all searching for our place in life. Trying to find “our” people, trying to find the “right” job, “right” neighborhood to live in, the list goes on. But why live like this? Why not learn to just be? Be within ourselves and only grow into our truth not away from it. It is as if it is the aim of everyone around us is to draw us closer to them not necessarily closer to ourselves.
Every morning when I wake up, I lay still in bed and gaze out the window placing a gratitude wtihin myself for the new day. No matter what the day holds, if it may be busy or hectic, perhaps unsatisfying or if it is the opposite, overwhelming me with happiness or any combination of those feelings, I know that for those few moments, I am still, not trying to change or alter anything. I am completely content with who I am in that very moment. Content with the journey.
Life is a journey. Although we hear this often to the point of it becoming a cliche it is so important to live by this phrase. Our journey is never ending, once we reach a goal, a new goal is formed. Constantly try to do better and be better, know that there is always more. But this constant striving should not make you less happy with where you are at. It is a balance that can be difficult to attain at times but it is well worth the effort. Looking back and reflecting on where I have come from has been a huge part of this success for me. There are small things to be found in each day that you can be thankful for, things that at one point seemed unattainable or things that you had once wished for. Make a list, write it down, say a prayer, say it out loud. “I have gratitude. I am enough. Today is enough. I will continue to grow no matter what circumstances surround me.”
We can all search for a more satisfying job, or a nicer home in a nicer neighborhood. But remember the journey begins within us. Finding stillness within us, being grounded and unshaken by the waves. Everything you need is found within you. It is not found outside. If you are not happy with your surroundings, your place in life right now, what may save you from unhappieness and regret is the thoughts you allow in your own mind. Where you point your mind is powerful, so point it towards gratitude and contentment. This doesn’t mean you stop striving, this means you understand that where you are is not where you will always be. It is simply a stop on a continuous path. Stillness will change everything. Gratitude will change everything. Give yourself the time to pause, the time to reflect. And with that everything will fall into place. Maybe you will realize the things that used to hold value to you, no longer matter or maybe they mean even more. Your idea of what will make you happy may change drastically becoming more internal, more true, and less external. Maybe you already know this (most of us do) but making it a daily practice has been a struggle. Push through it all, push through the layers and break them away. You will slowly find you have found what was meant to be yours. Your people, your place, yourself.
